HOW TO STOP SMOKING

should switch to cigars or a pipe, or to any of the various
. What it does sayis that, if you want to stop smoking. you
can: not smoulder on, but stop altogether while you’re at it.
The only absolutely safe cigarette is an unlit one.
Because of all those people who smoke more than one
cigarette during adolescence, seven out of ten will go on
smoking for thirty or forty years.
Only the teenager who has
never tried to smoke, or who tried and didn’t like it and had
the courage to refuse to go on trying. has much chance of
growing into a non-smoking and healthy adult.
In fact, it’s far easier to become dependent on cigarettes
after that first one than it is to become dependent on alcohol.
Most drinkers aren’t alcoholics, but not more than two out of a
hundred smokers succeed in remaining occasional smokers.
The slopping is easy
To stop is much easier than many smokers imagine.
True, most do believe that it’s difficult, if not
impossible or hardly worth the misery. Some have tried to stop, and
failed, and haven’t got the heart to try again. And some will
undoubtedly find it harder than others.
Merely stopping, and hoping that you’ll stay stopped by will
power, is to ask for that misery, invite failure, and end back
where you started on forty or fifty a day.
To stop and stay stopped you have to think about stopping.
prepare to stop, make it quite an occasion, follow a simple and
pleasurable routine for a few days. take some rather obvious
precautions against being tempted to start again and then
you’re a non-smoker.
